The Perranwell Centre, Cornwall, TR3 7JU
This was written for performance in Athens some time in the 420s BC, but is set almost a thousand years earlier. The hero Oedipus has left his home in Corinth because of a prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. He comes to Thebes, defeats the monstrous Sphinx by solving her riddle, and is rewarded with the hand of the recently widowed queen. He rules well for some years, but Thebes is then hit with a plague (see, contemporary relevance) and the Delphic oracle declares this is because the murderer of the last king was never brought to justice. Oedipus begins to investigate …
The play is the earliest and perhaps the best of all murder mysteries, but it is more than that, building to an unexpected and tragic climax.
